Lakers hold halftime edge in Game 4

Basketball Betting Lines

06/10/2010 - Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Powered by Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers have grabbed a 45-42 edge on the Celtics at halftime in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

The Lakers hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series thanks to Tuesday's 91-84 win, backed by 29 points from Bryant and a strong fourth quarter from backcourt mate Derek Fisher.

Bryant has 12 points at the half, one less than Gasol.

Andrew Bynum started for the Lakers despite a balky right knee, but he wasn't much of a factor in the first half with just two points in seven minutes.

Paul Pierce has 12 first-half points for the Celtics, but Boston has struggled at just a 41-percent shooting clip.

It was a back-and-forth battle for most of the first quarter, but both teams couldn't find a rhythm offensively. Boston was able to grab a 19-16 lead at the end of the period thanks to a three-pointer from Nate Robinson.

Robinson canned another three-ball early in the second for a 24-21 Boston lead, but Bryant helped the Lakers surge late in the stanza, scoring seven straight points for his team. It was part of an 11-4 burst, as the visitors opened a 39-33 advantage following Lamar Odom's layup just over three minutes left.

A layup from Ron Artest widened the gap to 43-35, but good defense from Rajon Rondo helped the Celtics get close again. He poked the ball away from behind on a driving Bryant and was the recipient of a long pass from Pierce, as the play ended in a breakaway layup for a 43-40 difference in the final minute.

Gasol blocked a three-point try from Ray Allen, but Kevin Garnett corralled the loose ball and sank a jumper from the left wing as time expired.

Fisher, who was accused by Boston coach Doc Rivers, for flopping to draw fouls, has no points and two fouls at the half.

Allen, who went 0-for-13 from the field in Game 3 for the Celtics, continued to struggle by going 1-for-6 in the first half for two points. That came on a layup in the game's opening minute.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
